Aquatec Maxcon began the major upgrade of the Woolgoolga Reclamation Plant (WRP) in February 2004 to ensure a higher standard of water treatment and additional capacity to deal with extra sewage flows from Mullaway and Arrawarra.The Woolgoolga WRP upgrade to 18,000 EP included the following:

  • Inlet works upgrade with 3mm step screen;
  • Secondary treatment process upgrade with two (2) SBR tanks using AquaStar Surface Aerators and AquaDecanter;
  • Disinfection;
  • Filtration with rotating disk filters; and
  • Reclaimed water storage and pumping.

Effluent Quality:

BOD5 5mg/L
TSS 5mg/L
TN 15mg/L
TP 2mg/L
Turbidity 2NTU

The majority of construction activity was on Woolgoolga WRP which was situated within a residential area, with Woolgoolga WRP immediately adjacent to Solitary Island Marine Park and bounded by wetlands. A modified watercourse runs through the centre of the site and connects to Willis Creek in the wetlands.

Due to the establishment of a high performing integrated team and innovative achievements, the WRP Alliance delivered on ALL stakeholders' expectations with zero environmental or safety incidents or complaints and met the extremely challenging timeframe with reduced capital costs of the order of 10%, whilst simultaneously delivering significant additional works within the original budget.

 Council has expressed their immense satisfaction with the delivery of a robust and operator friendly plant, and given their experience with previous sub-optimum projects have stated "to be actively involved in the delivery in the projects and achieve great confidence in outcomes...we would certainly do it all again.” (Geoff Newton CHCC 2004)
