Safe Work and Return to Work Award, a demonstration of safety leadership

Aquatec Maxcon Group is proud to announce our Maxcon Industries employee, Bruce O’Grady, won the “Injured worker achievement award” at the Queensland Safe Work and Return to Work Awards 2017.  Bruce was also a finalist in the “Best demonstrated leadership in return to work” award.

This year, 167 organisations and individuals entered the Awards, with everyone involved having demonstrated their commitment to keeping Queensland workers healthy and safe, or getting those that are injured, back to meaningful work. Bruce O'Grady

Bruce was crushed in a forklift incident and suffered four fractured vertebrae, collapsed lungs, a broken pelvis, fractured ribs, damaged spleen and liver, crushed nerves from the waist down and partial bowel removal, as well as ongoing complications.

With the support of company management and a positive attitude about his rehabilitation, Bruce has made a remarkable recovery, pushing himself to ensure his rehabilitation goals were met.  Bruce has now returned to work full time.

Trent Court, Yard Supervisor Maxcon Industries, said “It takes a very special person with determination to be able to turn a catastrophic injury into a positive outcome for himself, his family and his workplace. Well done to all involved.”

While Bruce was injured, he completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to assist in the role as a trainer for Maxcon Industries and the Aquatec Maxcon Group. The effect of Bruce’s incident and return to work has been that people are more aware of their working environment and are more proactive about safety. Bruce often speaks candidly to current and new staff about his injuries and the importance of safety in the workplace.   Bruce said “Management backed me from day one.  They were fantastic.”

Aquatec Maxcon Group would like to congratulate Bruce on both his significant recovery and winning this award.  We welcome him back to work and highly value his contribution and demonstrated safety leadership.

Yarra Valley Water announced as finalist in 2017 Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards

Yarra Valley Water has been announced as a finalist in the Environmental Protection category for this year's Premier's Sustainability Awards for development of their Waste to Energy Facility at Wollert in Melbourne’s North.

The interim Chief Executive of Sustainability Victoria, Stephanie Ziersch, praised the team for their creative and insightful work towards building a more sustainable environment.  “Delivering these Awards each year means we continue to discover the talent and enthusiasm Victorians have for protecting their environment and thinking creatively about new models of sustainability.

“These Awards represent Victoria’s highest recognition for sustainability and acknowledge leadership, innovation and achievement. Each finalist should be congratulated for improving sustainable outcomes across business, government and within the community."

To combat the effects of drought, Yarra Valley Water constructed a waste to energy facility next to the Aurora Sewage Treatment and Recycled Water Treatment Plants.  Aquatec Maxcon partnered with Yarra Valley Water to develop and design the plant and completed construction in December 2016.

The Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, will personally select the winners of the Premier's Regional Recognition Award and the Premier's Recognition Award, which will be presented at the Awards ceremony on Thursday 26 October at the Plaza Ballroom, in Melbourne.

Waste to Energy Facility, multiple award winner

Yarra Valley Water’s Waste to Energy facility won the award for “Outstanding Corporate/Institution Initiative in Collection/Processing Marketing” at the 2017 Victorian Australian Organics Recycling Association (AORA) Awards, held 23rd August 2017.

The Australian first facility was recognised for:

  • Widening the scope of oganics processing beyond just composting
  • An envrionmentally friendly disposal solution for commercial organic waste
  • Attracting significant media focus on both the challenges and opportunities in organics processing

The purpose-built facility converts organic waste such as food scraps, into renewable energy.  This occurs via the production of methane gas (biogas) which powers generators to produce electricity.

Aquatec Maxcon partnered with Yarra Valley Water to develop and design the plant and completed the construction in December 2016.  Since that time, the plant has been operating beyond expectation, producing enough electricity to power itself, the adjacent Aurora Sewage Treatment Plant and export surplus electricity to the grid as renewable energy; making the facility not just environmentally sustainable but also commercially viable.

Anthony Davey, Victorian State Manager for Aquatec Maxcon offered his congratulations to Yarra Valley Water, saying “It is a great achievement to be recognised by the industry in this manner. We are very happy to have contributed to this award-winning plant.  This award means we are setting high standards for the future of waste to energy in Australia”.
