Description

Aquatec Maxcon's self-respiring membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) provide an energy-efficient alternative to conventional treatment. MABR technology is based on passive aeration, that is, the diffusion of oxygen through membranes.

Innovative wastewater treatment solution produces high effluent quality at low energy consumption

During the process, an aerobic nitrifying biofilm develops on the surface of the membranes, which enables simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). This minimises carbon deficiency and results in low total nitrogen in the effluent. Aspiral™ is a smart wastewater treatment solution that packages our innovative MABR technology in standard shipping containers. This modular solution reduces energy usage for aeration by up to 90% compared to conventional methods.

Design Advantages of MABR Packaged Plants

Cost Effective

Aspiral MABR® enables advanced biological treatment in a compact package and simple design.

Reduced operational costs are achieved through:

  • High energy efficiency of the process
  • Less mechanical equipment than conventional processes
  • Attached biomass, increasing treatment capacity
  • SND- Simultaneous Nitrification & Denitrification
  • Reduced operations and maintenance costs through few moving parts

Easy to Operate

Plant operation is easy and process performance is robust. The MABR system can be fully automated and is customisable to client specifications to ensure ease of operation.

Aspiral L3

  • Plug-and-play solution equipped with all internal air and wastewater piping
  • Treats up to 300 m³/d of raw municipal wastewater
  • 40% of container volume aerated by fine bubble diffusers for residual BOD removal
  • Arrives pre-assembled and checked for rapid installation and startup

Technical

How MABR (Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor) Works

The unique, patented MABR process features highly efficient aeration and biofilm nitrification-denitrification. In the MABR, a spirally wound membrane is submerged in a tank. Wastewater is fed continuously and effluent is discharged by overflow. Low pressure air is blown through one side of the membrane and the biological activity takes place on the other side. Oxygen is constantly available to a fixed biofilm that develops on the wastewater side of the membrane sleeve.

Simultaneous aerobic and anoxic conditions develop in this zone, leading to simultaneous nitrification and denitrification using very little energy and space. This low pressure, passive aeration offers significant energy savings over conventional, high pressure aeration. The unique conditions in the MABR spiral promotes a highly efficient nutrient removal process even at low temperatures. This packaged treatment plant offers the highest quality final effluent with the lowest carbon footprint.

The Aspiral packaged MABR treatment plant requires low operator input, removes high levels of nutrient biologically, with low power consumption... this is a step change for advanced biological packaged treatment plants.

Key Advantages

Key MABR process advantages

MABR Lift thumb

  • The MABR process creates the conditions that enable simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) providing a highly efficient and highly effective aeration – up to 11 kgO2/kWh.
  • The passive transfer of the oxygen through the membrane into the biofilm, utilizes the nitrates for an effective denitrification.
  • The Bio-P removal (up to 90%) occurs due to the high ORP in the beginning stage and growing anoxic conditions in latter stages
  • The major advantages of the MABR process result in low TN/TP/BOD effluent at a very low energy consumption, small footprint and low operational costs.

MABR Modules are a building block that can be incorporated into design of advanced wastewater treatment plants where energy efficient removal of nutrients is required.

  • Reliable high-quality effluent (BOD₅
  • Very low energy consumption through efficient oxygen transfer
  • Modular Design easily scalable solutions ideal for decentralised locations
  • Retro fit to existing sites to add treatment quantity or increase effluent quality
  • Low Site costs due to packaged solution ideal for fast deployment parks, campsites
