Nereda® Aerobic Granular Biomass

Process Type
Capacity

Aquatec Maxcon are the Australian and New Zealand licensees for Haskoning’s Nereda® Aerobic Granular Biomass technology.

Nereda® is a biological wastewater treatment process that utilises compact aerobic granular sludge (AGS) to efficiently treat wastewater with superb settling properties. Within the granules aerobic and anoxic/anaerobic zones co-exist, so that multiple biological processes, including carbon removal, nitrification, denitrification and biological phosphorus removal all occur within the granule. The Nereda® process happens in three stages; Simultaneous Fill and Draw, Aeration, and Fast Settling.

The advantages of the Nereda® process are:

  • Reduced CAPEX through compact, simple, tank design, with minimal mechanical equipment required
  • Reduced OPEX through reduced mechanical equipment and efficient aeration control through the Nereda® Controller
  • Fast settling sludge acts as a built in clarification process
  • Multiple biological processes in one tank reduces the need for and cost of chemical dosing
  • Easy operation through the Nereda® Controller – a web based interface through Haskoning’s AquaSuite technology talking to the site PLC with fully transparent operations – no black box living within the PLC.

Specs****

Nereda® can achieve:

    • Final effluent total nitrogen (TN) below 3 mg/L and secondary effluent TN below 5 mg/L

    • Maximised biological phosphorus uptake, as low as 0.5 mg/L when supplemented with metal salt dosing

    • Reactor footprint up to 50% less than conventional activated sludge processes

    • Energy consumption up to 30% less than conventional activated sludge processes

    • Suitable for any catchment capacity, both domestic and industrial

Proven Performance Worldwide

Haskoning have been awarded over 100 Nereda® plants worldwide, in 21 countries over 6 continents, with over 75 currently completed and operating, ranging in size and scale including the impressive double-story, 2.4 million population equivalent (EP), Ringsend Nereda® facility in Dublin, Ireland.

Aquatec Maxcon have successfully delivered three Nereda® plants in Australia:

    • Kingaroy WWTP, the 12,500 EP first Nereda® in Australia with South Burnett Regional Council

    • Quaker’s Hill WRRF, over 100,000 EP plant for Sydney Water that provides the feed water to Quaker’s Hill Purified Recycled Water (PRW) facility

    • Longford STP, over 4,000 EP of domestic sewage with a similar amount of industrial wastewater on week days, with TasWater

Aquatec Maxcon in partnership provide ongoing process support for Nereda® AGS facilities, which includes process monitoring and improvement, technical support including a 24 hour support line, and software maintenance and upgrades, as well as implementing user requested changes to the process controller philosophy, such as targeting improved OPEX or increased effluent quality.
